Histories and Others examines various periods in Duval-Carrié’s career and provides a broad view of his interest in pursuing and making sense of Haiti through the lens of history, religion and politics. Widely considered one of the most important contemporary Haitian artists, Duval-Carrié creates works that speak to the complexities of the Caribbean and its diaspora. He encourages the viewer to rethink the Western Canon, to consider how Africa has shaped the Americas, and how the Caribbean has shaped the modern world.

Based in Miami, Florida, Edouard Duval Carrié was born and raised in Haiti through his teenage years when he and his family fled the regime of “Papa Doc” Duvalier and took residence in the diverse locales of Puerto Rico, New York, Montreal and Paris before settling in Miami. Parallels emerge between Duval Carrié’s cosmopolitan upbringing and his artistic sensitivity toward the multifaceted identities that form his native Haiti. His mixed media works and installations present migrations and transformations, often human and spiritual. The conceptual layering of his works has been further emphasized in his materials and through consistent attention to translucent and reflective mediums, such as glitter, glass, and resin. The introspective effects of these mediums transform his works into spatial interventions that implicate the viewer in their historicity.

Duval Carrié has been exhibited in major museums, art institutions and galleries in Africa, Europe and the Americas. As a curator he has been a fervent advocate of the Caribbean region. He started programs to highlight and present contemporary visual production of the region called the Global Caribbean in the Miami area and elsewhere. Initially staged to benefit from the presence of international art fairs in Miami such as Art Basel, to put in focus the visual production of artists from the Caribbean region and place them in a “commercial” context at these art fairs, the project has garnered and secured the collaboration of major scholars and institutions such as Duke University, New York University and Brown University.

Histories and Others opens on July 14, 2023 at 6:30 PM and is on view through October 1. The artist talk will take place on Saturday, July 15 at 1:30 PM at Auburn Avenue Research Library.
