Jaques-Enguerrand Gourgue
Jaques- Enguerrand Gourgue (1930-1996) is considered one of the foremost Haitian painters of the 20th century. His dynamic expressionistic style and vibrant, symbolic imagery made him one of the most influential Haitian modernist artists. He was born in Port-a-Prince, Haiti and began painting at a young age, developing a distinctive style that blended Haitian Vodou symbolism with modernist techniques. Gourgue’s paintings often featured scenes of rural Haitian village life, religious ceremonies, and mythological figures. His use of bold expressive colors and rhythmic patterning was influenced by traditional Haitian art forms as well as European Expressionism. (HT)
