Hammonds House Honors 2019 Nomination Form

On Thursday, September 12, 2019 Hammonds House Museum will present the first annual Hammonds House Honors. Hammonds House Honors is a recognition of excellence in Black visual art. In the inaugural year we remember iconoclast photographer Roy DeCarva on the 100th Anniversary of his birth and honor six individuals who elevate black visual art through their talent, genius, creative expression, passion and commitment to artistic excellence.

Eligibility
Artists, curators, arts administrators, organizations, and scholars whose careers have made a substantial impact on black visual art may be nominated.
Nominees must be actively engaged in the field
Nominees must reside in the Southern United States.
Candidates must be nominated by someone other than themselves.

Process
An eight-person nominating committee comprised of Atlanta-based curators, academics and visual arts professionals submit nominations via an online process.
Artists are contacted and informed that they have been nominated and are asked to provide support documentation (work samples, artist statements, bios, etc.)
A selection panel convenes to review the nominations and support materials and submits their votes.
Submitted ballots are tallied by Hammonds House Museum staff to ensure the identity of the nominees and winners remain secret until the evening of the Honors event.

Instructions for Nominators
Thank you for accepting our invitation to nominate 6 individuals who exemplify excellence in African American visual culture. We are confident that you will nominate individuals who are deserving of recognition and who elevate the field through their work. Artists for consideration may work in any of the following mediums: drawing, printing, installation, painting, photography, digital art, sculpture, sound art, video, mixed media and decorative art (textiles and material, glass, wood, metal, ceramics, mosaic, paper or other techniques).

Artistic Excellence Award
The Artistic Excellence Award is awarded to an individual artist whose creative and superior accomplishments in the arts have elevated Black visual arts, improved the cultural vitality of the form and has had a profound and lasting effect on the culture.

Awarded to a curator who animates public discourse, offers innovative approaches in the presentation of art, elevates public understanding and advances the field through their work. This individual may be with an institution or independent.

The Spriggs-Fuller Award recognizes individuals or organizations that enhance and strengthen the cultural community by curating, producing, exhibiting and advocating for artistic excellence in black visual art.

O.T. Hammonds Award for Philanthropy in the Arts
O. T. Hammonds was a committed patron of the arts and artists. This award is presented to an individual or collective with a demonstrable history of philanthropic giving or patronage to visual arts institutions, artists or independent projects.
