Hammonds House Museum presents 4 to 5 exhibitions a year. Each exhibition opens with an informational artist or curator talk that is taped and available for viewing for the duration of the show. Complementary programming such as lectures, panel discussions, and workshops offer addititional ways for visitors to engage with the artwork and to understand the role art plays in our everyday lives. In keeping with the Museum's educational mission, exhibition content is used to develop collateral materials that enhance and deepen the experience for visitors of all ages. We also host literary, film, and music events throughout the year. Join our email list to stay informed about Hammonds House Museum openings, programs, and special events.
The Tour Experience
Hammonds House Museum is located in a charming 19th century Eastlake Victorian house on a quiet residential street in Atlanta's historic West End. The house was lovingly restored by its last owner, Dr. Otis T. Hammonds, and visitors are encouraged to leisurely explore the Museum's architecture as well as its art.
Guided tours give an overview of the home's colorful history, describe the Museum's impressive permanent collection of art, and provide an in-depth explanation of the current exhibition. These tours offer insights into the creative process and a better understanding of the importance and scope of art from the African Diaspora.
Educators often schedule tours for their students because research has proven that being able to appreciate and talk about art helps to develop critical and independent thinking skills, which are essential to learning. Most guided tours include age-appropriate hand-outs.
